Secrets of the Stylists: Cannes Film Festival

Cannes Film Festival is just as famous for its distinctive brand of glamour and glitz as it is its film-critic credentials. The annual Cannes Film Festival is a firm favourite with fashion and movie lovers. Stylists and fashion houses go above and beyond to create the most memorable and iconic red carpet. It’s hard to imagine those iconic steps without being able to instantly visualize them.

Cannes stands out from other red carpet events due to its two-week duration. It includes many premieres, parties, lunches, and dinners. They all have a very glamorous dress code. How do you dress the stars for such an event?

We spoke with six celebrity stylists: Miranda Almond (Petra Flannery), Miranda Almond (Aimee Croysdill), Georgia Medley and Zadrian Smith. They shared their favorite Cannes red carpet looks and explained how they dress the A-list.

“I think Cannes’s fun because it’s French Riviera so it has it’s own sort of je sais quoi style,” Miranda Almond (Harper’s Bazaar senior Fashion Editor and personal stylist to Olivia Colman & Kristin Scott Thomas), says. “It’s home to many, many films that are highly rated, as well as brilliant actors, actresses, directors, and filmmakers. It’s not just about the ceremony. There are so many other things going on. It’s a mix between old and new which makes it so interesting.”

Petra Flannery, who style Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana, Emilia Clarke and others at Cannes, says confidence is key. “When I’m dressing celebrities for the red carpet I’m trying achieve them feeling confident in what they’re wearing,” she says. I believe that celebrities feel more confident in their outfits when they feel comfortable.

Zadrian Smith, an international fashion director, and Sarah Edmiston his styling partner, believes that the Croisette is the best way to get noticed. “It’s like an reunion,” he says. “All the stylists and PRs are present, all the designers – it’s the very best of the movie world. Spike Lee is always available for lunch. Edmiston also agrees. He says: “There is an energy and buzz because things just happen 27/7. I think there is something special about being on a beach or on the Croisette. You can feel at times like you’re in an epic Cary Grant film. It’s simply magical.
