10 Simple Ways to Stay Healthy After 40

    Get Plenty of Sleep

    • Get a good night’s sleep. Getting plenty of sleep is important for your body and mind to function properly.
    • What happens when you don’t get enough sleep? Lack of sleep can make you feel tired, cause memory problems, reduce immunity to disease and increase blood pressure.
    • How much sleep do I need? Everyone’s needs are different but the average adult requires about 7 hours per night (8 hours for adolescents). If you’re getting less than that it could be affecting your health and happiness!
    • How can I improve my sleep? Here are some tips:
    • Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet and cool (ideal temperature is between 60-67 degrees F).
    • Have a regular bedtime routine so that you know what time it will be lights out each night.
    • Avoid caffeine after 2 pm as well as alcohol right before bedtime as both can interfere with restful slumber.
    • Exercise during the day so that it helps wind down at night rather than rev up! Meditation is another great way to calm yourself down when you’re feeling stressed out by work or family life

    Eat Nutritious Foods

It’s important to eat nutritious foods at every age, but it becomes even more critical after 40. This is the time when your metabolism is slowing down, which makes it harder for you to maintain your weight and stay active.

It’s also when you’re more likely to experience hormone changes that affect how much energy you have and how your body uses food.

You can start by eating a diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats that contains less added sugar or salt than other foods. You should also choose healthy fats like olive oil instead of saturated fats like butter or trans fats found in processed foods like vegetable shortening.

As far as calories go: Women should eat 1 200–1 500 calories per day under age 50; 1 000–1 300 calories from ages 51–60; 800–1 000 calories from 61–65 years old; 600–800 calories from 66 years on up if they exercise regularly (most women do not); men need about 2 000–2 500 daily calories for their first 40 years until they get older—then add 250–500 daily calories according to their activity level (higher physical activity levels require more).

    Wear Sunscreen

If this sounds like a lot of work, don’t worry—it’s not. As long as you follow these guidelines, it’s easy to stay healthy and fit even after 40.

    • Choose a sunscreen that offers both UVA and UVB protection. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using sunscreens with an SPF rating of at least 30 for everyday use, but if you’re going to be in the sun for extended periods or will be sweating heavily or swimming, choose one with an SPF rating of 50 or higher.
    • Apply sunscreen in advance! Don’t wait until the last minute to apply your sunscreen because it takes about 30 minutes for the product to fully absorb into your skin before it becomes effective protection against UV rays. If you’re going out without time enough to apply 30 minutes beforehand (or are unsure), put on a moisturizer with SPF 20 or more every morning before heading out.
    • Put some thought into where else besides your face deserves attention: ears, neck and lips should be protected too!

    Floss Your Teeth Every Day

    • Flossing your teeth every day is a must if you want to keep them healthy. The American Dental Association recommends flossing at least once per day, and this can help prevent gum disease. Cavities can also be prevented by daily brushing, but it’s not enough to just brush with regular toothpaste; you’ll need a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen your enamel and fight cavities.
    • If you’re having trouble remembering to floss every night before bedtime, consider using an electric water flosser (also known as a water pic). Their nozzle attachments allow for easy access between tight spaces in the mouth while they provide the same results as traditional string flossing.
    • Alternatives to string floss include interdental brushes or picks—these tools are specially designed for use between teeth that are too close together or have braces on them so that they don’t get caught up in awkward angles of the mouth while cleaning out plaque buildup between each tooth surface.”

    Don’t Give Up on Exercise

One of the biggest reasons that people over 40 are so healthy is exercise. It’s important for your heart, lungs, and brain health. The Centers for Disease Control recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week—that’s just 30 minutes a day! The CDC also says that strength training should be done at least twice a week to maintain bone health and muscle mass as you age.

So what do you do? You can go for a walk or ride your bike around town or even take up swimming. If you want something more challenging, try running stairs or playing tennis with friends. A fun way to get exercise is by going dancing; this will help you stay fit while having fun! And don’t forget about resistance training such as weight lifting—it’ll keep muscle from wasting away!

    Use Extra Support If Needed

You might be tempted to skip the support when you’re feeling good, but this can lead to more pain and injury. Fortunately, there are many types of supports that can help if you need them—and they don’t have to be expensive or bulky.

First, make sure that your shoes fit properly and are not worn out! Too-tight shoes can cause serious problems in the knees and ankles over time. Next look for boots with good arch support; they will provide extra cushioning all throughout the foot while allowing proper alignment as well as shock absorption during impact activities such as walking or running up stairs. If these options aren’t available (such as for those who wear sandals when their feet swell due) then consider purchasing arch stabilizers which slip easily under any type of shoe or boot so no matter where you go your feet stay protected from rolling over onto their sides!

Lastly remember: Don’t worry about looking less stylish than others around you because everyone else isn’t necessarily healthier than yourself just because they don’t use supportive devices like yourself either.”

Protect Your Skin From the Sun

Protect your skin from the sun.

The sun is a thief that robs our bodies of precious vitamin D, but it can also do a lot more damage. To protect your skin, wear sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days and in winter. Be sure to apply it every 2 hours when outdoors; this includes when you are swimming or sweating profusely—even if you’re wearing water-resistant products! Choose a sunscreen with an SPF 30+ as it will last longer than lower SPF options (which also tend to be less effective). Apply 30 minutes before going outside so that the chemicals in the lotion have time to absorb into your skin.

Take a Probiotic Supplement or Eat Fermented Foods

Probiotics are a type of good bacteria that helps maintain a healthy digestive system, prevent and treat diarrhea, urinary tract infections and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), improve skin health, support the immune system and much more. By taking probiotic supplements or eating fermented foods on a regular basis you can help improve your overall health as well as boost your energy levels!

The best way to get probiotics into your body is through food sources like sauerkraut or yogurt—but there are also plenty of prebiotic foods that will increase the amount of beneficial bacteria in your gut. Examples include garlic cloves or green onions because they contain prebiotics called fructooligosaccharides (FOS). These carbohydrates feed friendly bacteria so they thrive within our bodies and crowd out bad bacteria that may cause illness-causing infections such as colds or stomach flu

    Avoid Risky Behaviors

    • Avoid risky behaviors. The most important thing you can do to stay healthy after 40 is to avoid risky behaviors.
    • Don’t drink alcohol or smoke—cigarettes and cigars, marijuana, heroin, cocaine and other stimulants like methamphetamines or prescription drugs that have been misused by someone else.
    • Don’t do anything else that is risky for your health: don’t use pills or needles (even if they are prescribed by a doctor), don’t drive drunk or take a chance on the road while you’re feeling drowsy from medication side effects, don’t do anything dangerous like bungee jumping or skydiving without proper training first!

Try to Cut Back on Stress as Much as Possible

One of the best ways to stay healthy after 40 is to try and cut back on stress as much as possible. Stress has been linked to a wide range of health problems, including heart disease and digestive issues. Chronic stress can also lead to psychological illness, like depression and anxiety disorders.

To combat this issue, it’s important for you to find ways to relax in your daily life. Some good options include:

    • Meditating or practicing yoga
    • Taking up an exercise routine
    • Listening to music or podcasts

You’re never too old for good health.

There is no set age, or even decade, at which you become too old to be healthy. It’s all about how you feel and what your body can handle. If you want to live a long life—and who doesn’t?—there are several things that you should do every day to help keep your mind and body in tip-top shape:

    • Eat nutritiously. Eating well isn’t just about losing weight! It’s about getting the nutrients your body needs for good health. At 40, it’s especially important for women since their bodies start producing less estrogen during this time of life (which can lead to osteoporosis).
    • Exercise regularly with moderate intensity at least three times per week for 30 minutes each time (or longer if possible) by doing activities like walking briskly around the block with friends; dancing around the living room while cleaning house; playing golf with friends; biking through town on weekends; hiking up nearby hillsides; swimming laps at a local pool; walking down stairs instead of taking elevators or escalators whenever possible—whatever gets those endorphins going! Remember that exercise helps reduce stress levels so don’t forget this important part when trying to stay healthy after 40 years old :)
